BOTOX® SAFETY: IS BOTOX® SAFE?

Numerous studies and decades of use have proven that BOTOX® is safe overall—when it’s injected by a skilled provider. One aspect of BOTOX® safety you should recognize is that the BOTOX® is unlikely to spread beyond the treatment area and cause botulism-type symptoms. However, patients should try to avoid rubbing or massaging the face after the treatment, since this can cause the product to migrate to other areas. Also avoid bending over or lying down for four hours post injection, and don’t exercise for 24 hours after the session. This is to avoid the medication migrating into unwanted areas, leading to brow or lid droop. Refrain from facials or massages for five days for the same reason.

There are some possible BOTOX® side effects such as discomfort, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. These side effects are typically temporary and mild. To avoid bruising, Dr. Holly Happe recommends avoiding alcohol for 24 hours before and the night of the procedure, as well as avoiding medications and supplements known to thin the blood, such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and fish oil for the week before.
